Simplicity Meets Performance: The Lasting Impact of the Lumenis Selecta II

04/23/2026

The Lumenis Selecta II is a Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) system designed to treat glaucoma by improving aqueous outflow and lowering intraocular pressure. While many modern laser systems have introduced new features and expanded capabilities, the Selecta II remains a trusted platform due to its simplicity, reliability, and consistent clinical performance.

The Evolution of SLT and the Selecta Platform

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) was introduced in the early 2000s as a major advancement over Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT). It provided ophthalmologists with a safer and repeatable treatment option for glaucoma patients while maintaining strong clinical efficacy.

In 2001, the Selecta platform received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance, helping to establish SLT as a mainstream treatment option. Shortly after, the Selecta II was introduced as a more compact and flexible version of the original system. Unlike larger, integrated laser platforms, the Selecta II was designed to connect to an existing slit lamp which allowed practices to adopt SLT technology without overhauling their entire setup.

Today, newer systems often include dual-functionality (SLT + YAG), advanced imaging, and integrated slit lamp designs. Despite the innovations, the Selecta II continues to be widely used due to its practicality and proven track record.

The Selecta II’s Portability and Flexibility

The Selecta II is a single-function system built specifically for SLT procedures. This focused design keeps operations straightforward and efficient, especially for practices that primarily perform glaucoma treatments.

Modern laser platforms often combine SLT and YAG capabilities, enabling procedures such as capsulotomy and iridotomy within a single system. While this can be convenient, it may not be necessary for every clinic. Practices that already have a dedicated YAG laser, or those that specialize in SLT, often benefit more from the simplicity of a dedicated platform like the Lumenis Selecta II.

Portability is one of the most discussed advantages among ophthalmologists when it comes to the Selecta II, though it’s often misunderstood. The system is compact and slit-lamp compatible, making it easy to move between rooms or use across different lanes within a clinic. However, while the Selecta II is easier to reposition, it is still a complex medical device. Practices that frequently move the unit between locations should plan for additional maintenance and designate staff to manage transport and setup.

Established Performance vs. Emerging Innovation

The Selecta II offers high-quality, reliable optics and can be connected to an existing Haag Streit slit lamp, which provides clear visualization and dependable performance during procedures.

Although newer systems may offer more enhanced visualization and precision through updated optics and interfaces, these advancements don’t necessarily translate into better clinical outcomes for SLT procedures.

Where the Selecta II stands out is in its simplicity. Its manual interface is easy to operate, highly reliable, and supported by readily available replacement parts. To contrast, newer systems often feature touchscreens, imaging tools, and more complex hardware, which can increase both cost and maintenance without delivering substantially different results.

Clinical Performance and Ideal Use

Ultimately, the most important factor is clinical effectiveness and the Selecta II continues to deliver SLT outcomes that are comparable to those of newer systems, making it a dependable choice for glaucoma treatment.

It is particularly well-suited for ophthalmic practices focused on SLT, clinics that already have a separate YAG laser, and facilities looking for a cost-effective solution without the need for extensive service contracts. Additionally, many ophthalmologists are already familiar with the platform, as it has been widely used in training programs for the past decade.

The Selecta II Stands the Test of Time

The Lumenis Selecta II remains a practical and effective solution in an evolving market. While newer technologies offer expanded features and integrated designs, the Selecta II continues to provide what matters most: reliable performance, flexibility, and consistent clinical results.
