Laser Locators Welcomes Back Dr. James Wynne to Discuss his Latest Research “Smart Scalpel”
Laser Locators, a world-wide leader selling ophthalmic lasers and diagnostic equipment, is pleased to welcome back Dr. James Wynne to discuss his new findings with his procedure, “smart scalpel”. This procedure uses excimer lasers to remove necrotic lesions of skin, including burn eschar, without causing collateral damage to the tissue. “Smart Scalpel”, was most recently tested on a Yorkshire pig, as a way to imitate human skin, and its findings were successful and much less painful than procedures currently used for burn wounds.
After attending the University of South Florida as Keynote Speaker for the Tampa Bay STEM Summit on March 30, 2016, Dr. Wynne, IBM physicist and world-renowned inventor, enjoyed lunch with the staff of Laser Locators and went into further detail on his steps to get the “smart scalpel” used in wound care centers, burn units, and M.A.S.H. units worldwide. With the invention of LASIK and PRK, which are practiced around the world and as a result have improved the vision of more than 25 million people, Dr. Wynne has found a non-thermal process of laser radiation to take place of the current procedure in place. His results found that the ArF excimer, purchased by Dr. Wynne at Laser Locators, can eliminate eschar with minimal or no damage to underlying dermis at three days post-burn injury. This finding sped healing up to 10 days post-burn and the burned skin was shown to be healing excellently.
Dr. Wynne has reached out for military funding along with a medical organization to collaborate with him on the project. His findings are another example of how cross-disciplinary research could lead to a major breakthrough that could help millions of people.
Dr. Wynne has been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, won the R. W. Wood Prize of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and awarded the Rank Prize for Opto-Electronics in 2010. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He is the author of numerous articles and scientific journals and the holder of 12 U.S. patents, including several in laser dentistry and laser dermatology, and has received numerous Outstanding Innovation Awards throughout his career at IBM.
